Would you trust a USED medela breastpump?
I'm pregnant, and will nurse. I have been told to purchase a Medela breast pump... and cringe at the cost of the medela breast pump I want- it's price, brand new, is anywhere from $250-$375... OMG. I'm a total cheapo, and the thought of spending this on a stupid pump is killing me... I would rather spend that in other ways on our little one! I have looked into the option of my insurance covering it- and they do not. I wanted to know from you moms who have nursed/pumped before, would you trust purchasing a used one, say from ebay or a childrens resale shop? Why or why not?

Absolutely.
However do you really need a breastpump? Particularly one that good? If you are going back to work, particularly before 4-6 months then you probably need that quality of pump, otherwise you probably do not.
I used a hospital grade medela as I had some trouble to start with. The hospital grade ones are considered safe for multiple uses, the home ones are considered single use. However my friend has a medela home unit (not sure if its the pump in style or what, pretty sure it is). Anyway they both use the same plastic bits.
The only difference is on the multi-use pumps the motor doesn't create suction it moves a piston/cylender assembly to create suction. A single use pump the motor itself creates suction. However there is still three feet of tubing between the bottles/breast shield and the motor. I have never so much as seen a drop of milk get into the tubes -let alone travel three feet. Even if the milk *did* get that far the main concerns are AIDS and CMV. AIDS dies rapidly as soon as it dries, and I am pretty sure motor oil would kill it even if it stayed wet. CMV I have trouble getting good info on but most viruses die when dried or exposed to sun. If you happen to be the paranoid type you can use a UV sterilizing light on the motor.
Look at it this way, if breastmilk regularly came into contact with old milk either in the motor or the parts then it would be unsafe for your own baby. Breastmilk is antimicrobial but only to a point. If there was milk festering in the motor the whole time you used the pump that would be bad.
There is a hypothetical risk and breast pump companies don't want to be sued so they warn consumers not to use second hand pumps.
