My baby spills up after every breast feed is it just wind or something more serious?
My baby's 1 week old and he spills up about two teaspoons of breast milk after every feed is it just wind or something else help?
Could be several things: make sure he burps. And burps. And maybe even burps again. They can't swallow back the milk if they burp it up, so you making him burp in an upright position allows the air to escape, and none of the milk.
Does the spit up smell like milk, or does it smell sour? Sour breath is usually a sign of reflux. This can be solved by switching to a sensitive stomach formula (a last resort), taking meds, and keeping the baby in a more upright position for about 30 minutes after feeding (you may want to do this anyway, at least until he's about 4-5 months)
Is there something you're eating that may be upsetting his tummy? This is harder to diagnose, but is a fairly simple fix if you figure it out.
Keep in mind, spit up is fairly normal. He's probably getting about 3-4 ounces each feeding, so teaspoon or two isn't that much, as long as he continues to gain weight. Spit up is NOT normal if it becomes projectile vomiting, or a rush of every thing he ate.
But the best thing that will probably make YOU feel better is: call the doc. Talk to one of the nurses. Be specific with her. She can better advise you as to normality or seriousness. This is their specialty, use them as a resource. Then you will feel more secure about your choice.
